New At Tunes: Strange Fruit |
Greetings,
In line with the popular theory that he can only be
killed by a silver bullet to the heart, Rolling Stones
guitarist Keith Richards escaped with nothing more
than mild concussion after falling out of a coconut
tree in Fiji and landing on his head. Initial concerns
that he might need brain surgery are clearly still
pertinent, although whether this field of medical
science is sufficiently 'micro' to deal with the
clockwork of a 62-year old bong who falls out of
trees could be an issue.
Not quite so fortunate with the surgeons was
one Charlie Barreca, the longtime sound man for heavy
metal band Twisted Sister. After some 35 years on the
road with the singularly crap outfit, Berecca's system
finally began to falter, as he fabulously understates:
"Some three months ago I woke up in the middle of the
night feeling strange, so I went to test my blood sugar
to see if my diabetes had worsened. I pricked my finger
and no blood came out - I knew I was in trouble."
A two week coma, some serious ventilator action,
internal bleeding and a liver transplant ensued, but
in spite of being given a 20% chance of survival, the
Richards-like 64-year-old pulled through.
"I want to get back behind the (sound) board
one last time when [Twisted Sister] play around here,"
Barreca commented last week. "I'll make people's ears
bleed one last time..."
