New At Tunes: It's That Time Again... |
Greetings,
MC Hammer's back catalogue has been sold for $2.7 million. You
heard me. Two point seven million dollars. The whole smelly
collection has gone to aptly named music publishing company
Evergreen, who plan to store the paper that this nut-boilingly
daft deal was written on in a cupboard, next to the snake oil
and lucky heather.
Peeling a pair of underpants off his head to speak on
behalf of Evergreen, David K. Schulhof commented: "We anticipate
that many songs in the MC Hammer catalogue will emerge as a
perfect fit for licensing in movies, television shows and
corporate advertising." And thinking about it, he's probably
right. Anyone marketing very hot soup, exposed electrical wiring,
fragile glassware in a gift shop, that sort of thing, would
surely part with top dollar for a universally ridiculed novelty
abomination like 'U Can't Touch This'. Equally, a forward-thinking
parish priest might wish to re-allocate some of the roof restor-
ation fund to finance an advert on hospital radio using Hammer's
other inexplicable hit, 'Pray'. And that's without milking the
lucrative world of home improvements. When was the last time you
were captivated by an ad for a mallet? Exactly.
At the height of his success, Hammer sold 10 million
copies of the album 'Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em', pulled in a
huge sponsorship deal with Pepsi, marketed Hammer dolls, Hammer
lunchboxes, Hammer clothing (yes, you could buy parachute pants)
and single-handedly dragged an entire genre of music into the mud.
Then in 1996, he filed for bankruptcy with debts in excess of $14
million and became a TV evangelist. He's all wrong. Leave him in
the toolbox.
