Subject New At Tunes: Chime And Punishment

Greetings,
Nineteen ear-poisoning christmases after a shower of pop's most
cloying buffoons dragged themselves out of bed to accidentally
raise money for starving people, the curse of those clanging bells
is to be revived with fresh blood. Thanks to the titanic emotional
leverage of Mr. Midge Ure, a re-recording of the dreadful ‘Do
They Know It’s Christmas?’ is imminent. Safely ensconced behind
the bulletproof umbrella that is the charity single, Ure is
assembling a cast of part-time compassionistas for another crime
against imagination. And there’s not a thing anyone can do about
it. Coldplay, Travis, The Darkness, Keane, Jamelia - already on
board. And we all know who’s coming next. Wall-to-wall whining
millionaires, grinning courageously through their co-opted empathy,
bleating on about the importance of us minions putting pennies
into a pot they could fill in a blink.
But “the song still stands up,” says it’s co-writer
and producer Ure, displaying a crumb of the egotism he was famous
for during his ‘80s glory days as a singing flea. A recent
story on the original recording session back in 1984, however,
casts a slightly different light on the earnest squeaks of Midge
and co. Francis Rossi, from Status Quo, clearly too shot away to
consider masking the truth, remembers it thus: “It was crazy.
A really crazy day. There were shitloads of drugs - coke,
dope, all sorts. Everyone was going bananas. Rick [Parfitt, of
the Quo] told me recently that he got so out of it he couldn't
sing any more and was so annoyed on his way home that he was
almost arrested for kicking road cones. Everybody was totally
out of it and Rick and I were the drug centre.” Right on...
